Like a beetle bursting its way from a bottle, Unschooling merge onto the right side of the left lane. New track “Shopping On The Left Bank” is an idiosyncratic blues of the cosmic order, courtesy of duelling, syncopated guitars that draw enjoyably distinct similarities to Calgary outfit ‘Women’. Needle-threading this arrangement, the track swims around the warbling pitch of languished & broken equipment, punctuating the alternating time-signatures and exorcising poetic pop expectations. It’s a concise blend of groove, with the winding machinations of B-52’s whimsy.

Now, at the risk of defining a very maximalist arrangement as sparse, the truth of this song is that at just over 2 mins it forces your attention, and through its own meteoric pace makes a statement. And the statement is thus: Unschooling have signed to Bad Vibrations, And Unschooling will be somersaulting your locomotion needs into a blossoming field near you.
Having myself previously seen Unschooling hit these spiralling heights back in Portsmouth [Neu Waves] & at Rotterdam’s Left of the Dial festival, I can confidently say this band is on a trajectory of bliss. One that seeks to keep their audience attentive, moving & chaotically scrambling for that downbeat.
