SPEEDBOAT Announce new EP ‘Better Men’ with first cut 'Sadie Grey' via 0800 Moshi Moshi Records

Words by Ursa Gregson

Speedboat - aka Brighton fellows Johnny and Will Griffiths aka the Blue Jean Brothers aka Musk and Hook - are just two boys, trying to be Better Men. Their latest single 'Sadie Grey' is out now and is a sumptuous hors d'oeuvres whetting our appetites for the feast of new EP 'Better Men' coming 24th June on 0800 Moshi Moshi.

'Sadie Grey' is an abstracted retelling of Johnny’s experience trying to visit his girlfriend in France. “After jumping through endless bureaucratic, post-brexit-bullshit hoops; it’s difficult not to feel criminalised when crossing borders these days, even when you’re only crossing for love.”

The jet-setting, business-savvy, heartthrob-accountant, be-coiffed and be-denimed brothers are beaming from a different facet of 1977-1989 than most bands swilling angular dissonance around the bottom of their glasses. Gorgeous, bombastic synth-pop and 80s movie tropes are mined from that rich, rich seam and the result is slick, irresistible, very, very fun. How far Speedboat's tongues are stuffed into their cheeks we will never know. We don't want to know. The music is glorious. Their recipe tastes like the glass-fronted, cream-leathered, all-mod-con riverside bachelor pad I never had and I'm back for another helping.
