Sheffields Yarni Shares New Single 'Cherub'

Words by Steve Stevens

Yarni has shared new single 'Cherub' from upcoming album project PIGNA, his first as a new signee to EMK.

Traversing jazz-funk, soul, afrobeat and breakbeats, 'Cherub' is a sophisticated yet danceable cut with infinite head-bobbing potential. The horns and flutes interplay masterfully, and the single seems to come from out of time - it's classic, modern and everything in between, all at once.

Taking inspiration from the 70s punchy jazz-funk beat ‘Why Did You Do It’ by Stretch, Cherub features the innate swing of saxophonist Jonoa and the metronomic movement of bassist Ally McMahon, two of the ensemble’s members Yarni invited to record “whatever came to them”, he says; “there were so many quality takes coming out from the session, that it just became a case of editing it into an arrangement that flowed better,” explains Yarni. ‘Cherub’ follows the recent release of sludging thump funk cut ‘Nova’, the luscious single ‘The Astral’, and 70s jazz-funk influenced ‘In A Dream’, which have seen supported by the likes of Jazz FM. The station selected ‘In A Dream’ for their Bandcamp Fridays Picks.

To celebrate the release of his upcoming album ‘Pigna’ Yarni is throwing a free party in Sheffield on Saturday June 4th - the event will be hosted at Sidney & Matilda in the new ‘Forest Room', forming part of the Sidney Summer Weekender.
