In keeping with the band’s penchant for re-invention, ‘Pale Blue Dot’ distills the sound heard on their 2023 EP, ‘Lock Eyes and Collide’. Dialing in and stripping back, the Dan Carey-produced track doesn't rely on the post-punk energy the band emerged with in 2022. Instead, the gently layered acoustic approach lets the intricacy of the composition speak for itself. Disquieting, surrealist meditations lurk beneath laid-back, breathy vocals, just as the urgency of the cycling acoustic guitars seeps through their understated presentation. In the words of the band, the song explores ideas of “ego death” and “soaking in the vastness of everything”. These themes feel symbolic of the band's fearlessness in the face of creative upheaval and confidence to say more with less, whilst delivering a brooding atmosphere beneath the glassy production.
Despite its nonchalant front, ‘Pale Blue Dot’ is steeped in subtle intensity, a foreboding taste of what’s to come.
To celebrate the release and the milestone it marks, Speedy Wunderground will be hosting a release party at London’s Shacklewell Arms on the 30th September. Joining Moreish Idols are special guests Disgusting Sisters, as well as Speedy Wunderground alumni.
