Words by August Janklow
Exciting is the word.
When you hear that Brighton’s sweethearts mary in the junkyard deliver again with a supreme night-driving song that captures exactly what it feels like to gun it down the pacific coast highway at twilight (I imagine).

The Craig Silvey (Sam Fender, Wunderhorse) produced track: This is my California starts off very surfy but by way of Clari Freeman-Taylor’s absolutely distinct guitar font (the same tone that knocked me on my ass the first time I heard Tuesday, and did so again at the Windmill the following month). It’s wide and crunchy, space age warm.
There’s a lovely Indigo Girls harmony declaring that it was in fact “old” and “cold” before one of the dainty explosions they’ve gotten to be masters of.
The words talk about a fantasy that’s good enough, the way I read ‘em. And these drums! Clari’s a great lyricist but these are some A+ serving the song drums. And just to finish spreading the love the bass line grooves.
I have been to California.
Iit isn’t like the hole of whiny violin that opens up near the end of this one, but it’s not totally different either.
Check out their EP This Old House if you haven’t already, they’re on tour too played their first US dates in my beautiful and not at all smelly home town of New York, New York at TV Eye on the 4th of December with Model Actriz.
This track pairs very well with a dog on your chest, purchasing drain cleaner and Friday evenings in the home.
