MARUJA, live from WOLF Barcelona

Words and Photography by Foxtrotter

Just a week after dropping their latest single 'Break The Tension', Maruja made a striking debut in Barcelona, headlining at the WOLF on October 11th.

Despite it being their first performance in the city, the crowd was more than familiar with the band, eagerly welcoming them onstage before quickly whipping up a powerful pit a few verses in and chanting the iconic sax riffs of set opener ‘The Invisible Man’.

The set included many of the bands signature songs from the past few years, but an unexpected highlight was the improv jam played halfway in. This segment allowed every member to shine and show their unique skillset, from the psychedelic hypnotism provided by Matt Buonaccorsi’s bass to the devious and chaotic beauty of Joseph Carroll’s saxophone - the ever-beating heart of Jacob Hayes’ drums, and the vocal exorcisms and guitar stabs of Harry Wilkinson.

Though they’ve only released two EPs, Maruja have perfected their style and material - new song Look Down On Us is just as hard-hitting as the rest of their work. It has become abundantly clear that Maruja will soon become an essential name for experimental music. Their concerts are more than just music; they are a transformative and emotionally intense experience, a temporary gateway to a formidable dimension of their own creation.

For those who did not have the pleasure of witnessing this, the picture gallery below offers a glimpse into the live world of Maruja, and the atmosphere that made their Barcelona debut a night to remember:
