Lambrini Girls Share Frantic and Sensitive Single ‘Love’

Words by Charlie Brock

Lambrini Girls have risen to prominence in the burgeoning new-wave punk scene over the last eighteen months through rough and ready, highly politically charged tunes and incendiary live shows.

Their debut album, Who Let The Dogs Out, is on the horizon and the Brighton band have shared a new slice of the impending record. On first impressions, ‘Love’ is classic Lambrini Girls: thunderous percussion and chunky, sleaze-funk basslines from Lilly Macieira are met with howling guitars courtesy of Pheobe Lunny. Lunny dissects false love and toxic relationships with her forked tongue, taking on a mockingly lovesick lilt in parts. The cut feels like a sibling of ‘Mr. Lovebomb’ from their You’re Welcome EP, this time with a more mature outlook and a driving sense of purpose.

The cut breaks down after a spiralling buildup of whirling guitar: the soft riff is backed by atmospheric drums as Lunny repeats the track’s heartbroken refrain. It’s Lambrini Girls at their most vulnerable and the band still shine without the protection raucous of punk noise. Before you think they’ve gone soft on us, Lunny and Macieira crash back in from left field with a monstrous outro.

As a glimpse of things to come, it is intriguing to see LG take on a more introspective and sensitive outlook, even if it is only for a few bars. They are expanding their sonic horizons, which is a delight to behold.
