Words by Ursa Gregson
An enticing spaghetti western moodswing - short and sweet at 1:45 - the instrumental track is playful with its influences and manages to squeeze a deft range of emotion and cinematic atmosphere into its limited span. The ending section dangles a danceable, south-of-the-border, Khruangbin-tinged energy before whisking it away - we're hoping for more like this from Gold Tokens in the future.
Of the track the band write: "Gold Tokens’ single “Way Out West” is an instrumental Surf Rock tune which wears its influences on its sleeve. Inspired by sounds such as the crashing guitar chords of Link Wray to the rapid tremolo picking of Dick Dale and the psychedelic melodic sensibilities of Khruangbin the tune also evokes images akin to Ennio Morricone’s spaghetti western soundscapes. The pulsating guitars and organs weave around each other to eventually unveil a scorpion-like twist in the tail, before promptly disappearing into the ether from whence they came."
